The following is a summary of “Are all vulvar masses Bartholin cysts? A series of cases,” published in the December 2024 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Izceyhan et al.

Vulvar masses, though uncommon, are significant conditions that affect individuals and often lead to visits to gynecology outpatient clinics for diagnosis and treatment.

Researchers conducted a retrospective study to explore the variety of vulvar masses encountered in gynecology clinics.

They documented 3 exceptional cases with distinct histopathological diagnoses and varying presentations. A consecutive series of 5 patients was also reviewed, including 1 individual with a Bartholin abscess and 1 with a labia primary abscess.

The results showed that vulvar masses can appear in different forms, with both benign and malignant conditions observed. Additionally, of the 5 patients, 2 were presented with common pathologies, which were Bartholin abscess and labia primary abscess. Furthermore, considering alternative diagnoses were crucial, as well as the possibility of malignancy (P-value<0.05).

They concluded that vulvar masses must be carefully evaluated for both benign and malignant conditions, and this was essential to avoid assuming they are sole Bartholin cysts or abscesses.
