The following is a summary of “Association between triglyceride-glucose index and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and all-cause mortality in the general US population: NHANES 2001–2018,” published in the December 2024 issue of Endocrinology by Wang et al.

The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has shown inconsistent associations with mortality in the general population, and the relationship with systemic inflammatory markers, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), remains unclear.

Researchers conducted a retrospective study investigating the relationship between the TyG index, the TyG-NLR index, and all-cause mortality in the general U.S. population, focusing on individuals’ health outcomes.

They calculated the TyG index using fasting TyG levels and derived the TyG-NLR index by multiplying the TyG index by the NLR. A weighted Cox proportional hazards model assessed associations with mortality risk, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) visualized dose-response relationships, 15,388 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2018, with a median follow-up of 118 months were included.

The results showed that 2,333 participants died during the follow-up. After adjusting for potential confounders, no significant association was found between the TyG index and mortality. However, participants in the highest quartile of the TyG-NLR index had a 63% higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to the lowest quartile.

They concluded that the TyG-NLR index was significantly associated with all-cause mortality, providing better predictive value than the TyG index alone.
