An educational session at the upcoming 2024 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium will feature a discussion on metastatic estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer. Marla Lipsyc-Sharf, MD, joined by colleagues Michael Oliphant, PhD, Neil Vasan, MD, PhD, Dan Stover, MD, and Amy Beumer, PhD, will share five cases and explore relevant treatment considerations.
Physician’s Weekly (PW) spoke with Dr. Lipsyc-Sharf to get a sense of what clinicians can expect to learn about metastatic breast cancer.
Can you give us an overview of what you and your colleagues will cover in your educational session?
Dr. Lipsyc-Sharf: We will be highlighting advances in ER+ breast cancer. We will discuss multiple cases to illustrate how we use patients’ individual tumor biology to tailor treatment in ER+ breast cancer that has spread or metastasized. We will also share how we sequence therapies based on how people respond or do not respond to treatment and what considerations are most important to the patients.
What would you like clinicians to know?
I think that we are so fortunate to have many treatment options for ER+ breast cancer—and yet this is still the most common kind of metastatic breast cancer. This is still a disease that many of our patients are dying from. One of the things we’ll do in this educational session is discuss together the best ways to sequence therapies and evaluate patients.
The panel is appropriately placed at this conference because the conference is where we will hear about and highlight new research, and that is how we will make strides in reducing breast cancer deaths. I encourage people to come to the educational session. It will be a rich discussion with varied presenters and, hopefully, a lot of audience participation.
I hope it will inspire future discussions and studies about how to improve these treatments.
